Taxes
The moral to the story: do your state taxes first. I got all excited when I finished my 1040 with a $550 refund coming my way. Discovering that I owe $400 to California's Franchise Tax Board was a serious buzzkill.
The good news: last year I underestimated on my paycheck witholding, and ended up owing something like $800. Ick. So having things cancel out is a definite step in the right direction.
So now it's a race: will the IRS return the $550 they owe me before the FTB cashes my check? Doubtful.
