Railroad Tycoon
A couple of friends stopped by on Saturday evening for a bit of gaming. The star of the evening was Railroad Tycoon, easily my favorite boardgame ever. (And I like me some boardgames.) Plenty of trade-offs to weigh, options to consider, and crushing debt to spiral into. A good time was had by all.
Three players worked well, but we all felt like the game was over too quickly; our long-term strategies sometimes didn't have time to play out, and the outcome of the game often hung on whether one player or another could catch the leader before the clock ran out. We all kind of felt like we wanted a long enough game for one player to really cement their domance.
I also managed to locate not only Lunch Money and Zombies!!!, but another great game I'd completely forgotten about: Falling. It's a real-time cardgame based on the notion that all the players jump off a tall building, and whoever hits the pavement last wins. Warped, yes, but great fun as you frantically try to push your opponents down.
Unfortunately, Falling and Lunch Money both only really work with 4 or more players, so we couldn't play them. Net result: I'll have to get some more people over next time so we can enjoy those games as well as a bigger game of Tycoon.
And I'll have to pick up a copy of Settlers of Catan, which comes well-reviewed and recommended. My friends have been talking about a semi-regular Game Night for quite a while; time to get that up to critical mass.
