Sen. Stevens on Network Neutrality

Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) opposes Network Neutrality because, quote:

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially.

[...]

The regulatory approach is wrong. Your approach is regulatory in the sense that it says "No one can charge anyone for massively invading this world of the internet".

Yep. His internets are getting tangled up. The tubes are filled up. And charging people extra is the only way to fix it.

This guy is making our laws, people.

Now, in all fairness, Senator Stevens's motives are admirable: he wants an internet usable by everyone. But this is a perfect example of how tech law seems to come about in this country: lawmakers, who are otherwise very smart people, misunderstand or half-understand the way the internet actually works, and end up listening to industry lobbyists.

So yes, I'll be renewing my membership in the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and I hope you'll consider donating as well.
