Weekend Wrapup
Krav Maga
Krav on Tuesday was great. Choke from the front, rolls, and focus mitt work with a 300-lb dude with a killer right. His left hook says "DIE." Mine says, "Stoppiiiit!" I must work harder.
Mantras for the night:
- Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
- "NUT SHOT! ELBOW! KNEE KNEE KNEE!"
I get the feeling that I'm missing a lot by only going once a week, and I'm definitly in better shape than I was. It's really the first half of the class that's tough, and I can live through it. So maybe it's time to double up.
Bouldering
Wednesday at Stoney Point was great. Mostly, we just screwed around on slant rock, playing on the steep north side and the mantle problem, all three of us working on smears and talking trash. I bagged a couple of problems that were challenges for me. "The Nose" on Boulder 1 was satisfying-- solid holds the whole way, but nice and high; the slabby top was well into "don't fall" territory.
I also spent some time working variations on the mantle problem on the northeast side of Slant Rock, including the sit start. I'll have it next time.
The Fat Bastard stood up like a champ. I couldn't be happier with my choice of crash pads. And it's finally all dusty with chalk and, well... dust. I hate virgin gear.
I think I'm finally getting my feet back. A few nights at Stoney and I'm startinting to feel solid on my smears again, and I'm starting to read the rock for good foot placements fairly well. Still a lot to (re)learn, but it's coming back.
Credit Card Security
I got a call yesterday on my voicemail yesterday saying that there had been some suspicious charges on one of my credit cards, and could I please call 866-bla-blah to speak with a consumer protection agent.
I called the number, and the first thing she asked for was my full credit card number and expiration date.
"Well, I'm in a bind here," I said. "You called me, and now you're asking for my credit card information. Is there another way I can prove who I am?"
She instead read me my full name, and asked me to confirm the last four digits of my credit card, and social security number.
Premptive answering of obvious question: yes, I followed up by calling the customer service number on the back of the card, and confirming with an agent that the account has been closed and a new card issued.
Hiking
Hiked the Chumash trail up to Rocky Peak on Saturday, which was a nice challenge. More rattle snake excitement. I started out a little after 5pm, so I knew I'd be descending in the dark. I brought a headlight, but found that I was able to see far better by starlight. For the last half mile or so, I could hear the play-by-play of the UFC pay-per-view from somebody's back yard. Round trip: a little over three hours.
Sunday was quiet, though I spent most of it running around. Hit the rock gym for a couple hours in the morning, then headed up to Camarillo to meet friends to plan next weekend's Yosemite trip. Shopped for clothes and bedding, and then headed to my parents' house for dinner.
Tonight I run and clean the house, and try to get to sleep early.
