Compassion

I got to talking last night with some friends about the problem of homelessness and how best to deal with someone on the street with his hand out.

Dark Days continues to seep into my thinking, and I'm frustrated that fighting the causes of homelessness hasn't been more of a national priority. We need national health care. We need rational policy on homlessness based on what helps, rather than our vengeful notions of what people "deserve."

It would be nice if more were done to prevent the problem rather than trying to sweep it under the rug. Unfortunately, you have people who choose homelessness and those who are forced into it for a variety of reasons, so a one size fits all solution just won't work - and government is apparently only capable of single "solutions."

Yeah, absolutely. I was struck by how the political landscape and rhetoric seems completely disconnected from the reality of what's happening on the streets. (Moreso that usual, even.) And that's when policy makers are even discussing the issue, which they usually don't. Domestic policy just isn't on the front burner now, and probably won't be for some time.
