An Honest Day's Work

Spent most of Saturday testing my new sunscreen, and learning to use a chainsaw. Both went extremely well, and I helped clear a mountain of brush from some friends' back yard. In six hours we filled an entire giant-sized dumpster. We are awesome.

We followed up a day of hard work with excellent Thai food and watched Night Watch, a Russian vampire/magic flick that wowed us all. (The sequel is in theaters now quickly disappearing from theaters, so I'll be watching for the DVD release.)

Sunday's softball practice went very well. I'm getting way more comfortable on the field, and I'm settling into the outfield. Our first game is late(ish) Tuesday night. Should be fun! (Except that I can't bat to save my life. Cages tonight after dinner?)

And, not satisfied with a bit of running around and throwing, I hit the gym after lunch. 20 min on the eliptical, 20 minutes on the stairmaster, then 10 minutes of stretching. I was tempted to follow that with some weights, but if I'm going to lose weight, I gotta emphasize cardio, which means working out nearly every day. Can't keep up that pace if I'm trying to cram everything into every workout. I get plenty of resistance work at Krav.

And I picked up Vernor Vinge's Rainbows End and Charles Stross's Accelerando, both of which have been recommended by both Marc Andreessen and Cory Doctorow.

I'm about 20 pages into Accelerando, and it's fantastic so far. Haven't had a book grab me like this since Cryptonomicon.

And I've got everything set again for another evening mountain bike ride. This time, I remembered my camera. Expect beautiful sunset shots.

Wanna help clear icky invasive bushes???? We've been ripping stuff out (slowly) and had a rotting tree chopped down. Chris is having fun getting an upper body workout splitting logs. We have great ideas for all the logs (stepping stumps, seating, firewood), but moving them is a lot of work!

Woo! I kept telling everyone that they ought to keep the wood and make it into furniture, but I guess they weren't too excited about that option. I think it was eucalyptus, so it might not have been the best for furniture. (I think it warps badly as it dries out?) Splitting logs is no joke! I bet your man is getting in good shape!
