Mark Pilgrim on iPhone Kerfluffle

Mark Pilgrim, as usual hits my thoughts on the head:

Apple made it very clear what they were offering: a carrier-locked, closed-development mobile computing device where every aspect of the user experience would be controlled by Apple. I'm told it can also make phone calls. If that's what you want, then buy it. If not, then don't.

Amen. I just bought a brand new 80GB iPod Classic. I love it. I used to have a player that had all the stuff that people think the iPod should have: radio, Ogg support, audio recording, etc. I never used any of it. What do I love? Album artwork. The scrollwheel. The "shuffle" feature.

We just got his (green) and hers (purple) iPod shuffles. Why? All we really wanted, when it came down to it, was something that played music we loaded (and thus enjoy).

Comparing price with features, really thinking about what we would use, the shuffle just made sense. ~200 songs is plenty (I can always reload it with different ones), not being able to select a particular song isn't a problem when the only ones on it are ones I selected, and the size can't be beat.

Really, a device doesn't have to include the kitchen sink to be exactly what I want. Sometimes complexity is bad.

My sister got me a shuffle for Christmas last year, and it's what finally converted me over to iPod/iTunes for music. Glad you're enjoying yours!
