While I was sick, I watched a couple of anime flicks that have been sitting on top of my TV for weeks.
SPOILERS AHEAD for Tekkon Kinkreet and Grave of the Fireflies
What a fscking downer. Mom dies. Aunt is a horrible wench. Kids starve. Beautifully told story, but damn...
What really pissed me off is that the kids didn't have to starve-- all the brother had to do was go back and apologize to his aunt, and they would at least have had food. His pride killed both him and his little sister, but there was only the most fleeting mention of this in the movie.
Fantastic stuff. Reminded me a bit of The Triplets of Belleville, only way, way more exciting. And a great story. Some obligatory amime/manga tropes are thrown in, but they have limited impact, and I was generally happy with the depth of the characters.
