Steve Jobs at Home in 1982

I read the caption before I saw the photo:

STEVE JOBS AT HOME IN 1982—"This was a very typical time. I was single. All you needed was a cup of tea, a light, and your stereo, you know, and that's what I had." —Steve Jobs

(The photo and caption are from Diana Walker: The Bigger Picture. (buy))

I pictured a slightly scruffy Jobs on a beat-up couch with a cup of tea, a lamp, and a boom box. But the picture tells a different story: there is no furniture, and the room, the lamp, and the stereo are all lovely. There isn't much, but what's there is wonderful stuff. It speaks to Apple's values of minimalism and quality.

(And I get a kick out of the collection of vinyl records. This was back in the dark ages before CDs. It's crazy to see the man who brought digital music to the masses with the last analog mass media. (Well, unless you count VHS...))

I really like the philosophy that this photo puts on display. Simple needs met with exceptional possessions. If I'm guessing right, those are Quad (http://www.quad-hifi.co.uk/) speakers, not cheap in the '80s and not cheap now. I admire the "do it right, the first time" philosophy that top shelf gear evokes for me. If only it were always possible to get top shelf gear; I'd be much happier with fewer, high quality possessions than a lot of middle of the road stuff.
Absolutely. It reminds me that happiness isn't having what you want, it's wanting what you have. I've invested in great gear, from MP3 players to bikes to outdoor gear. It's all been worth it. In the long run, I'm spending far less for my hobbies than a lot of folks I know.
