Movies!

I saw Cloverfield, and recommend it, with caveats. Form your own opinion.

But I unreservedly recommend The Descent. It's the best horror movie I've seen in ages. Just awesome. Plenty of sudden frights and repulsive gore to keep horror fans squrming in their seats. And the way the main character just keeps getting stronger and meaner... wow. Awesome. If you can, watch this with the original ending from the European cut, which I'm told is an option on the DVD. (I've already sent the movie back to Netflix, so I can't verify.)

I finally saw Ratatouille last weekend, and loved it. Enough to buy it. It's just wonderful. Unfortunately, the short that comes with it, "Lifted" isn't all that great. But no worries-- Pixar has released a DVD collection of all their short films to date, so you can enjoy all your favorites in one place.

David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises was visually stunning, and features maybe the best fight sequence in any movie I've ever seen. It's classic Cronenberg: the tension is understated, and the pacing deliberate. If you like Cronenberg, you'll love this.

The Kingdom was exciting, but not nearly as brainy as I'd hoped, or as the title sequence suggested. If it had had a little more of Syriana in it's DNA, I'd have been very happy.

Day Watch, the second half of the story that began with Night Watch, is fantastic. The pace picks up from the first movie, and there's plenty of new magical wierdness going on.
