iTunes Movie Rentals

Last night I decided I wanted to see Michael Clayton, and just for grins, decided to "rent" it from iTunes. Mistake.

The iTunes app crashed not long after starting the download. I restarted it, and noticed that Michael Clayton was nowhere to be found.

I went back to the iTunes store, found Michael Clayton, and clicked "rent", thinking that iTunes would be smart enough to say, "Dude! You already rented that! We'll just check on the download status, and resume!" Nope. iTunes advised me that my credit card would be charged. I clicked "cancel".

A quick search for "resume download" in iTunes help led me to click "Store -> Check for Purchases", which caused iTunes to resume downloading Michael Clayton. (Why doesn't it do this when you start iTunes?)

I left it to finish up overnight, and returned this morning.

iTunes had crashed again sometime during the night. Meh. I started it up, clicked on "Store -> Check for Purchases", and saw that it was just a few minutes from completing. Excellent.

Ten seconds later, iTunes popped up an error message: "Some portions of this file appear to be corrupted. Select Store -> Check for Purchases to try again."

I did so. It failed again. I tried resuming the download several more times, only to have the same message pop up each time.

I'm putting Michael Clayton in my Netflix cue. We'll see which arrives first: the DVD or the download.
