CrossFit in the NYT
Yesterday, The New York Times posted a great article on CrossFit, the boot camp-style daily workout program that's been quietly taking over the fitness world.
It's great stuff. CrossFit takes a scientific approach, incorporating training methods from martial arts, military training, and Olympic power lifting and put it all together into a package that changes every day.
It's simple: check the website for the "Workout of the Day" or W.O.D., and post your results to the website when you're done. If you prefer to work out with a trainer or in a group, the CrossFit website can connect you with local resources.
CrossFit incorporates new aspects like competition, time limits ("Do as many X as you can in 2 minutes."), and exercises that are a lot more challenging than your typical barbell workout. It's a great program, and I'd urge anyone who is bored at the gym to give it a try.
Unfortunately, I'm already asking a lot of my body, and my schedule is plenty crowded without trying to squeeze in a CrossFit Workout of the Day each morning. So CrossFit is relegate to the "Copious Free Time" list. No, I don't do all I could. But I'm conscious of drawing the line somewhere that works for me.
But if I ever get serious about the notion of becoming a personal trainer, I'll start with CrossFit.
