Improvements!

I did a little bit of coding over the weekend, and brought it to a good stopping point tonight. At the top & bottom of the page you'll notice a trail maps link. Click on that, and you'll get a page with a Google map showing the locations of all my hiking and biking GPS maps. Click on a marker, and you'll get the name of the ride/hike. Click the name, and you'll get a page showing the map of that route. (Just like clicking the "GPS map" links I put into some of my posts.)

This is just a first step, but it's a good one, and seeing as how I'm not going to have a lot of time to code in the next few days, I thought I'd throw it up here for everyone (and myself) to enjoy.

I also did a little work writing code to optimize the display of GPS routes. I used to just dump every GPS trackpoint into a Google map, but that's pretty heavyweight for a 3-hour ride with 2000+ trackpoints. The new code basically strips out a lot of unnecessary information, leaving just the points that really define the shape of the route. Depending on how curvy a route is, 2000 points can easily become 600 or less, which really helps lighten the load on the Google map page.

The net result is that I now have a snazzy way to find all my maps, and they all work a little more smoothly. Big whoop. Soon it'll be cooler. Stay tuned.
