That's why Chris either rides the bus or his motorcycle (60 mpg) to work. Our car is down to about 9000 miles/year, and will be less now that I won't be driving to the post office every day. Our gas is $3.59/gal. Still a lot and people are starting to change habits. BT reports that ridership is up 10% compared to the same time last year.
It won't be long before the bus system is overloaded here. Only one thing keeps me from taking the train to work every day: after 8pm, there's simply no way for me to get home, even though it's only about 8 miles or so. The trains don't run that late, the L.A. Metro buses don't go to Simi at all, and the last Simi Valley bus back to Simi leaves Chatsworth at 7:30. Los Angeles and its suburbs have never been walkable or had viable public transport. We really banked on gas staying cheap forever, and now it's biting us big time.
