Bad Day

Today started off shaky, wobbled through the afternoon, and then cratered hard. First an extremely frustrating night at Jiu Jitsu, then news that Wahington Mutual (who, incidentally, have all my cash) has failed.

The powers that be, of course, assure everyone that everything is fine. But they've been saying that all along, haven't they.

Just remember, your deposits are insured, so don't panic. Be a little uneasy until you find out more, but don't panic. :)

My biggest frustration is that the whole time the sky has been falling, all the major players have been steadfastly telling us "The sky is NOT FALLING."

I simply don't have time to earn a living, have a life, AND educate myself to the point where I'm really capable of understanding how our financial system works. So I've got to take a lot of things on trust. I trust financial institutions to be stodgy and conservative and slow-moving. I trust government regulation to make sure their executives behave. Right now, I don't trust them, yet I can't function without them. So I'm dependent on people I can't trust. Feels terrible.

True. They get paid to understand the financial system and make sure stuff like this doesn't happen... and they've failed. If I did that badly in my job, I'd be so fired.

Now, if you want a financial institution that is probably less risky, join a credit union. They are member owned, which means they answer to you.

Yes, credit unions RAWK! The whole point of them is that the shareholders are the people with accounts; the financial people ARE keeping the account holders in mind when they make decisions.
