SPF 45

SPF 45

This is the contents of my "backup bag", which I pack for every ride. It holds spare socks, gloves, tubes, bug repellent (for ticks), arm warmers (not pictured), and a packet of sports drink. All the stuff that I commonly forget to pack, but can't ride without.

I'm a red-headed, fair-skinned guy living in California. And Fatty reminds us that cyclists of all stripes soak up an aweful lot of sun. So I've added SPF 45 sunscreen to my bag, and I'll be wearing it from now on.

Sunscreen is a good thing to include. It should be reapplied every 2 hours, too. Also, they make these patches for kids (maybe adults - I don't know) that you can put on your arm and it changes color to tell you when you've been in the sun too long. Personally, I like the spray but not aerosol sunscreen. The aerosols don't cover evenly and tend to clog on me. Squirt bottles are a little messy. My boys already know we don't go out until we put on sunscreen. Wil knows how to help rub it in.

Another fun fact: If you plan to wear both sunscreen and bug repellent, let the sunscreen sink in for 20 min. before putting on the bug stuff. It's also wise to put the sunscreen on 20 min. before exercising. If you're already sweating when you apply it, it tends to run off with the sweat.

As for aerosol, pump, etc, I still like good ol' lotion. Goes on even, and I can see where it's been applied. I like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer for my face (great protection, very light), and Bullfrog Superblock everywhere else (where a heavier coat doesn't bother me). And if I'm at the beach, or camping, it's Bullfrog *everywhere*.

And yes, I'm going to retire that bottle of Repel. It's great stuff, but recent research has found deet to be a neurotoxin. Time to find something new.
