Eight Years On
For all our mirror shaded self-assurance, all it took was a bunch of guys with box cutters.
The next day, a friend and I were optimistic that this might unite our country. Might give wiping out poverty and ignorance and oppression, the roots of terrorism, the urgency it deserved.
Instead, we got Dick Cheney, John Yoo, John Ashcroft, and George W. Bush. We got the 1% doctrine. We got wiretaps, and national security letters. We got extraordinary rendition. We got Guantanamo. We got Abu Graib. We got the worst kind of tyrant: one who believes he is saving his country.
The shock of the attacks of September 11, 2001 has dimmed for me. My disappointment at my country's response to those attacks is stronger than ever.
