Bunch 'o savages in this town...

I usually keep both of my bikes locked up safe. My road bike is safe at work, and my mountain bike was safely locked to the railing on the balcony at my apartment. However, in order to keep it out of the rain as much as possible, I moved it under the overhang.

It wasn't easy to see, and the balcony isn't easily accessible, so I thought the risk was low. But somebody climbed up onto my balcony and stole my mountain bike.

I'm covered under my renter's insurance, so I'm now looking at new bikes and weighing options. And I'm thinking about where I'm going to store the new bike. The balcony obviously won't cut it.

When stuff like that happens, it's hard not to feel a little violated and pissed. And it sucks.

But it's just stuff. In my case, it's kids destroying things, but that's the mantra I use. It makes it easier to move on, throw things out, replace only what needs replacing.

I'm glad you have renters insurance that will cover it so you will get a new bike.

Yep. Exactly. And this week I have one friend who was in a car crash (he's fine) and another who's been in the hospital for several days, and every time I turn on the news I see NOLA reenacted in Haiti. So it's pretty hard to get worked up over a stolen bike, especially when I'm insured and get to go shopping for a new one right away.
