ChoicePoint's Culpability

I'm just getting up to speed on the whole ChoicePoint fiasco. QDN hit this on the head:

...the truth of the matter ... is that a group of criminals managed to create fake businesses and then set up entirely valid accounts with ChoicePoint in the name of those businesses, and then obtained the information about consumers via those accounts.

Had ChoicePoint immediately sent letters to everyone potentially affected, I might be able to give them the benefit of the doubt. But it looks like ChoicePoint has decided to keep quiet and hope that those victims outside California simply don't notice. What kind of todler logic is that? "If I don't tell Mommy I broke the lamp, maybe she won't know it was me."

I invite the executives at ChoicePoint to mature past the age of three. When you screw up and put people in danger, you tell them, and you try to put it right.

I can't help wondering: Why is sensitive personal information for sale? Is it even possible to really protect myself when all my personal information is already out there in the hands of half-wits?

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go check my mail.
