ChoicePoint, Identity Theft
Two excellent posts at Schneier on Security. The first points to EPIC Executive Director Marc Rotenberg's testimony before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, and it is, indeed, worth reading.
The second post reprints a section of an excellent article at The Register discussing why identity theft is essentially unavoidable. In fact, it's so good, I'm going to post my favorite bit here too:
Incredibly, the only person with absolutely no control over the collection, storage, security, and use of such sensitive information is its actual owner. For this reason, it's literally impossible for an individual to prevent identity theft and credit card fraud, and it will remain impossible until Congress sees fit to regulate the privacy invasion industry.
Both the Register article and Marc Rotenber's testimony are well worth reading in their entirety.
