I was at a Ruckus Society workshop a couple of weeks ago, and we talked a bit about that. Typically, direct action like Occupy is staging now are the *last* step in an effort, used to push the target over the edge into meeting protesters' clear, concrete demands. But Occupy is doing something different- using direct action not to force change, but to build their constituency, and they're having great success. I've been impressed at how well they've fared against NYC efforts to disrupt/evict them-- they've showed that the leadership is experienced and the protesters are unified and disciplined. So the question at that time was: can Occupy focus itself and produce real demands and get real change?
So yeah, I'm with you. I think it's *awesome* that Occupy now has the whole world asking, "What do they want?" When they answer (and they're starting to), it'll be interesting to see where it goes.
I've heard it said that they're targeting the wrong people, that they should be targeting the government (which they can change) rather than banks (which they cannot). But I think it gives their movement a resonance that's clearly paying off, and when they do go to Washington, *that* will be the traditional direct action with a clear target and concrete demands.

Could someone please explain what the Occupy people think they are going to gain here? The concept just confuses me.

That sounds about how some of our home projects go. They always take several trips to the hardware store and extra steps. One day we'll be smart and just hire someone to do stuff for us....

I never appreciated the show when it was on, but I started watching some of the episodes a couple of years ago. It really had a lor of good stuff that I understand and appreciate as an adult in a way a kid never could.
