Cooking Ahead

Cooking Ahead

Penelope Trunk:

I've read that people who have willpower don't actually have willpower. Rather they make decisions for themselves that have clear parameters and then they don't reconsider them, so those people don't need any willpower.

I've been sticking to my diet plan (two days, big whoop), but I know I'm going to have no trouble, because I'm doing exactly what works for me: I planned my meals for the week, and then I went grocery shopping yesterday. I have everything I need to feed myself for the rest of the week, and it's all easy stuff. I'll do the same next week.

The single best thing I can do for my diet is always to have leftovers in the fridge. If I'm hungry, I don't want to cook, I want to eat. My stomach takes over, and cooking is off the table. The only options that make any sense to me are get take-out, or eat leftovers.

So I'm going to cook my meals ahead. I can ride my bike, come home to tasty, immediately-consumable leftovers, and then I'll have the mental wherewithal to cook.

Freezer meals are a great way to cook ahead. You can even make big batches and freeze single servings. I have lots of soup and pasta sauce in the freezer for over the winter.
That's great advice.

I forgot to mention my other new trick: snacks. I used to worry about ruining my appetite, but then I realized that an appetizer has never once stopped me being hungry for dinner. So if my stomach is growling and dinner is still 30 min. away, I go ahead and have some cheese and crackers and don't worry about it.
